Excellent Filter July 6, 2010 Alex D. Raz Charcoal is like a sponge, it stops absorbing odors when it's saturated. It will fill up faster with heavier loads because it literally runs out of physical space to trap the molecules.
I have a heavy load with three cats in a small apartment and my charcoal filters have lasted about a year. You can tell because they stop removing odors when the charcoal is saturated. Washing at that point only buys another week or so.
These ARE washable, you just have to make sure to follow the directions. They say to soak them in warm water with dish soap for 20 minutes (I like to use the bathtub because they don't fit in the sink). Then rinse thoroughly with cool water and let dry for 24 hours.
The last bit is very important! The filter will smell pretty horrible if you don't let it dry overnight, trust me!
I've tried bleach but it doesn't seem to make a difference...just use dish soap so you don't wreck your clothes!
It seems to be a complete tossup as to whether you get the plastic or aluminum frames. I have two Rabbits and it seems to be about 50/50. The aluminum is more durable, I wish rabbitair would allow you to specify which version.
I also wish these were easily refillable with aquarium charcoal. I've tried and it's just impossible to fill all the cells and put it back together without making an enormous mess. Maybe in the future...we can only hope.
These things don't ship well. DIY Skills needed! July 1, 2010 D. Kim (Chicago, IL USA) I've had my Rabbit Air filter for a long time. When I first installed the original filter, I had a problem where the frame opened just a bit and let some carbon escape. Not a big deal. It was just a small amount and I snapped the frame together. When I read a review saying that the frames were now aluminum, well they must have fixed the problem! Time to order!
Sadly, it looks like I've got the "New and improved" plastic frame. My replacement frame came with sound effects! I could make music with it now! Think of a giant carbon filter maraca. You can see some of the pictures I uploaded. The frame split in one corner and released a lot of the mouse poop looking carbon.
This isn't the end of the world though. With a bit of effort, you can herd the poop back into the plastic frame cells and snap the frame together again. The frame appears to have melted plastic "spot welds" to keep it together, and obviously one of these failed in mine. Without that plastic weld, the snaps for the corner popped open and released the hounds.
A DIY fix. Some herding. A bit of tape. But I shouldn't have to do this. I'm sure others would have returned it and given them 1 star. I did buy it from amazon, but it was sold/shipped from Rabbit Air. I hope they read this. Go back to the aluminum style!
Love the Rabbit, HATE this filter! May 28, 2009 Sean Byron (Milwaukee, WI) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This filter is the one bad part of the system. I have not really noticed the bad smell, but the plastic piece came loose and much of the charcoal escaped. A poor construction on a otherwise good system.

Has this sweet almost acrid odor after washing. I rinsed mine in plain water but I couldn't seem to get rid of the smell. My 2 star rating is in reference to the life of the filter and the fact that I don't believe this product performs well after washing. The filter before washing functions fine. I love my Rabbit Air purifier (its greatly reduced my multiple cat allergies), not a fan of the Charcoal filter.
Shipped fine. Works great. March 7, 2009 B. T. Denyer (Midwest, United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This item was a direct OEM replacement to the filter that came with my unit. My original had a plastic frame while this one has an aluminum one. They also do not have the honeycomb cell shapes (for the charcoal) anymore.
Aside from the obvious shipping materials (which were ample): The packaging for this product is minimal: only a purple bag around it. No pointless extra box or other materials you just end up throwing away. The purple bag is "PE rated for recycling.
My last filter lasted 3 years, which is the same duration they suggested. How I knew it was time to change out the filter was that the unit stopped clearing odors (i.e. cooking, cats) from the room.
I did, however, wash the filter every month or so with Ivory dish soap and warm water.
